GORDON MATTA-CLARK
EXPERIENCE BECOMES THE OBJEC
Donoso, Pedro

Gordon Matta-Clark, scion and rebel, died at 35in 1978 and has since become a cult figure oflate-twentieth-century art. Born in New York andtrained in architecture at Cornell, he went on toquestion the field's conventions in vivid projectsthat excised holes into existing buildings orassembled deeds to New York City alleys andcurbs. His work and words, while sophisticatedenough to make him an "artist's artist," andcolossal and outgoing enough to draw publicattention and affection, were always alsogrounded in social or political convictions.
